CSAT Response Rate
The share of surveyed customers who actually complete a CSAT survey — responses received divided by surveys sent.
CSAT response rate % = (surveys completed / surveys sent) x 100CSAT response rate is the denominator hiding underneath every satisfaction number. It counts how many of the people you asked actually answered, and it quietly decides whether your CSAT describes your customers or just the loudest edges of them.
There is no universal benchmark. Feedback programmes most commonly cluster around 15%, with 8-18% typical; single-digit rates of 4-8% are common and can be perfectly fine if the responses you do get are timely and useful. Channel matters more than any target: a one-click survey embedded in the reply or shown in-app collects far more than a standalone "rate your experience" email. Chasing the number by pestering customers tends to lower the quality of what comes back.
What it hides: a low response rate doesn't just make the score noisier, it makes it biased. The people who self-select into answering skew toward the delighted and the incensed, while your quiet, mildly-satisfied middle rarely clicks. So a 90% CSAT built on a 4% response rate is a confident statement about 4% of your customers — the 4% who felt strongly enough to reply — not a read on the other 96%. Report response rate beside the score every time, or the score is decoration.
